Information for Counsellors providing support

to Darlington Borough Council Employees

Our counselling service will provide employees with short term focussed counselling, where psychological distress is adversely affecting the employees health and impacting on their work performance or attendance

Our aim through the counselling provision is to;

- Assist in the prevention of sickness absence

- Provide expertise and guidance on organisational factors which adversely affect mental health at work

Confidential Referrals

All referrals are submitted through to us on a confidential basis (self-referral) directly from the employee

There are NO reports required for Darlington referrals

Process

1. Complete an initial assessment to evaluate the condition

2. If Counselling is appropriate to continue therapy providing 6 counselling sessions maximum

3. If Counselling is not appropriate to signpost to alternative signposting / treatment services

Not all referrals will require treatment, and it is expected that the Counsellor will provide advice where appropriate or refer on to a more appropriate service (e.g. to GP / other agencies / charities)

Where the Counsellor believes that further treatment over and above these six sessions is clinically recommended (we can only submit requests for additional sessions in extenuating circumstances, and where the client is in psychological distress and where their work performance and attendance is being affected)
