Information for Counsellors providing support
to Darlington Borough Council Employees
Our counselling service will provide employees with short term focussed counselling, where psychological distress is adversely affecting the employees health and impacting on their work performance or attendance
Our aim through the counselling provision is to;
- Assist in the prevention of sickness absence
- Provide expertise and guidance on organisational factors which adversely affect mental health at work
Confidential Referrals
All referrals are submitted through to us on a confidential basis (self-referral) directly from the employee
Darlington Borough Council will consider additional session requests in exceptional circumstances - Please see the standard interim report below-

Process
1. Complete an initial PHQ & GAD assessment to evaluate the condition
2. If Counselling is appropriate to continue therapy providing 6 counselling sessions maximum
3. If Counselling is not appropriate to signpost to alternative signposting / treatment services
Not all referrals will require treatment, and it is expected that the Counsellor will provide advice where appropriate or refer on to a more appropriate service (e.g. to GP / other agencies / charities)
Clinical Tools
GAD and PHQ assessments are to be completed at both the Initial and Final sessions
